Step 1: Identify Your Topic

Suggestions for Finding Your Topic:

  • Discuss your topic with the Instructor
  • Ask a Librarian at the Reference Desk on the second floor of the Library to help you choose a topic or refine your topic idea.
  • Go to the Reference Collection and look over the index and the article titles in a specialized encyclopedia that covers the subject area or discipline of your topic (for example, psychology, United States social history, women's studies, linguistics, environmental studies, etc.).

    This publication gives ideas in over 100 categories ranging from adolescents through business, ethics, the future, government, media, space to world scene. Topics are coded by the level of difficulty in finding materials.

    CQ Researcher
    CQ Researcher is located on the Index Tables within the Infomation Commons. It is published weekly by Congressional Quarterly, Inc., a research firm. Every topic is carefully chosen, throughly researched, then put into report form. Each report averages 20 pages and includes a thorough examination of the topic, a chronological overview and an extensive bibliography for further research.

    The following listed series are all useful for finding beginning information on a wide variety of controversial topics. In general they each contain essays which present both points of view of the issues being covered.
