Mesa’s demographics are changing rapidly and the community has seen a 150% increase in the Latino population from the 1990 to 2000 Census. Latinos now account for approximately 25% of Mesa’s general population.
The Changing Demographics Project began in 2000 to promote a greater understanding of these changes in Mesa’s demographics and the implications for the college. Particular emphasis was placed on creating a link between Mesa’s Latino community and the college.
The Changing Demographics staff works with Latino community members via the Mesa Association of Hispanic Citizens (MAHC). The college is a partner in several MAHC activities
including the annual Mesa Latino Town Hall and the Mesa Small and Minority Business Center and Symposium.
Another active partnership is that between Changing Demographics staff at MCC with Mesa Public Schools (MPS). MPS, the largest school districts in the State of Arizona, serves over
72,000 students from K-12, including a growing Latino population. This partnership becomes increasingly vital as MCC continues to expand the Downtown Mesa campus. The majority of
Mesa Public School sites within a few miles of downtown have student populations ranging from 30-92% Latino. Complete
demographic information for Mesa Public Schools can be found on the MPS website.
