Why Should You Join The Faculty Association?

The Faculty Association is the organization which negotiates faculty concerns with the college and district administration. Since Arizona is a "Right to Work" state, we have no formal faculty union. However, MCC and MCCD administrations recognize our association as the sole body charged with the articulation and defense of all employment related issues for the faculty. The Faculty Association is YOUR VOICE to the campus and district administration; if you are not a member, you have NO voice.

As members of the faculty we are continually faced with a number of very important issues that require a sustained, unified voice to secure action from the district administration. Will new policies be beneficial to faculty? This depends in part on the strength of our numbers. The salary and benefits packages we enjoy are negotiated through the "Meet and Confer" process. Without a strong faculty voice in that process, it is unlikely that our benefits will remain at their currently level, let alone get better. We must stand united and strong to convince our administrations of the value of competitive compensation packages. But we cannot negotiate from strength if our numbers of few. Further, the concept of "shared governance" requires the participation of individual members of the faculty. If you believe that faculty must have a voice in the governance of our institutions, you should add your voice to the Faculty Association.

Beyond this, however, the Association has also secured new rights for its members. Not only does the Association provide legal representation for faculty members concerning employment related matters, we have now negotiated a contract with council to provide legal representation in personal matters at a reduced rate. But this is ONLY available to Faculty Association members.

Finally, you should know that membership in the Faculty Executive Council, the district level senate, is based in part on the membership of the colleges. The more Association members a college has, the more representatives they are granted. MCC currently has the largest representation in the FEC, but it COULD BE LARGER. Every faculty member of MCC who fails to join the Association WEAKENS our voice in the district.

In short, why should YOU join the Faculty Association? Because it is in YOUR OWN BEST INTEREST to do so.

Make a difference. Let your voice be heard. Join THIS YEAR!
