GIRLS N’ IT CONNECT
MCC Hosts Local Middle Schools Girls at Annual Technology Event

What : Mesa Community College’s Business and Industry Institute is hosting an information technology
career exploration event aimed at 8th and 9th grade girls. More than 450 middle school girls in the Mesa, Scottsdale, Peoria and Roosevelt school districts will participate in the event which features interactive sessions including; “411 on Internet Danger,” which will teach about Internet dangers like hackers and predators. In addition, they can choose to participate in “IT in the City,” and talk to a panel from local city governments; or the CISCO sponsored session, “Real World Solution,” where groups of girls will be charged with the mission of creatively solving relevant global threats by use of technology. Threats could include anything from helping endangered animals or assisting residents in natural disasters.

Why: Girls N’ IT Connect is a hip and exciting event to encourage young women to become educated and aware of opportunities and contributions they can make in the Information Technology field. The opportunity to learn about IT careers, talk to real world professional and see how their skills could be applied in real life situations will help many young women as they plan for future careers and schooling.

Visual: The interactive sessions will provide great opportunities to photograph middle-school girls as they experience the hands-on-displays such as the “Trading Spaces: Smart Homes” an interactive and virtual home that provides “do-it-yourself” home network set-ups
