Short Bio for Mursalata Muhammad

Mursalata Muhammad received a B.A. and M.A. in English from Oakland University, Rochester, MI. She has also done doctoral work at The Pennsylvania State University. Currently, she is an Associate Professor in the English Department at Grand Rapids Community College. In addition to incorporating service into her teaching, she has designed service learning and civic engagement orientations for faculty, students, and community partners. Muhammad has served as a student advisor and Faculty Liaison for Academic Service-Learning at Grand Rapids Community College. In 2005, she was awarded the Michigan Campus Compact Service-Learning Award. She spends much of her time revising was to integrate civic engagement into the curriculum. Muhammad also serves community organizations like Girl Scouts and United Way. She is also a poet.
