Students seek options as spring break nears

With spring break only a few weeks away, students are being faced with one very important question – what to do?

Many students look at spring break as a week to head out of town and find the best place to party.

MTV will be heading to Cancun, Mexico for the third straight year and is sure to draw a large crowd of college students willing to do just about anything.

MCC student Mark Hitt plans to forego Cancun, and head to Rocky Point for spring break.

"Although I would have really liked to go to Cancun and party with MTV, I didn’t have enough money," Hitt said. "So I decided that Rocky Point is a good alternative. It is closer, cheaper and just as much of a party town."

Mexico remains a popular hot spot among college students, especially those who are under 21, as the drinking age in Mexico is 18.

Even with all the students who are heading out of town, there are plenty of people who are staying nearby for spring break.

"I’m not going anywhere for spring break this year," said MCC student, Jeremie Beale.

"I have to stay here and work while everyone else gets to have fun in Mexico or California."

Leah Tharaldson, an ASU student, decided that since some students aren’t able to go anywhere for spring break, there should be something fun for them to do at home.

"I decided that if I couldn’t go to the party, I would bring a little bit of the party to me," Theraldson said.

Tharaldson is an intern at Hilo Hattie, The Store of Hawaii, which sells various Hawaiian paraphernalia in Arizona Mills Mall.

On March 8 and March 15, Hilo Hattie is teaming up with Palapa to bring Aloha Night to the Valley, where students are encouraged to enjoy a night of fun and dancing. Palapa is located on 6th Street just west of Mill Avenue in Downtown Tempe.

For students not looking to party over spring break, there are lots of opportunities to watch baseball spring training games at Hohokam Starium.

March 13: The Chicago Cubs vs. the Chicago White Sox, at 1 p.m.

March 15: the Chicago Cubs vs. the Arizona Diamondbacks, 1 p.m.

March 16: Chicago Cubs vs. Milwaukee Brewers, 7 p.m. For more information, call (480) 644-4451.
