Students arrived on campus at the beginning of the semester to find that MCC’s vending machines had changed from Coca Cola products to Pepsi products.

The decision to change vendors was made when the district’s five-year contract with Coca-Cola expired last summer.

Ron Etter, dean of Administrative Services, said that the district office reviewed "pouring rights," common among colleges and universities, which means exclusively going with one vender.

In an effort to generate more money for campus remodeling and scholarships, the district signed a food service and beverage vending contract with Aramark.

"Aramark was chosen by (Maricopa Community Colleges) through our competitive process. The beverage vending company is Pepsi-Cola and was chosen by Aramark through their own competitive process," said Etter.

A minimum amount of $150,000 will be given to Maricopa County Colleges; $25,000 for the Scholarship Foundation and $725,000 for remodeling.

The funds will be distributed throughout the district according to the needs of individual colleges.

Pepsi advertising will only appear on the vending machines, although Gatorade is planning an on-campus promotion.

According to Etter, there was no student or faculty input regarding the change.

"I didn’t know brand preference was an issue," Etter said.
