Football bids farewell to Savelio, HarveyBY CHRIS BOWMAN
The T-birds massive number 60 will convert into a Gator next season, since he has signed on with the University of Florida to play for legendary Coach Steve Spurrier. Savelio spent three years at MCC due to a knee injury that sidelined him for the 1999 season. John Harvey, who, along with Savelio, was named first-team All Western States Football League performers in 2000, has signed on to play the next two seasons for the Kansas University Jay Hawks. Softball The Thunderbirds are led by sophomore stand out Monique Woodmansee, who has a 13-3 record, and leads the ACCAC in ERA with 0.51. Sarah Goleb has been MCCs best surprise this season, as she has helped in pitching and hitting for MCC. Her .469 batting average and six homers leads the team along with her 14 doubles that rank first in the conference. "We need to work on getting better," said Coach Byron, who was named Coach of the Year in the ACCAC last season. "We need to take care of business on the road. So fa, we are undefeated at home. We just need to keep improving as a team and learn how to win on the road." Baseball Lytle came to MCC from Mesa High without being seriously recruited by many schools, but he has had no problem impressing scouts that bypassed him in high school. Lytle is batting .390 this season, while leading the ACCAC with 28 stolen bases. The Thunderirds are 17-14 overall, and 8-10 in the ACCAC. MCC is in third place, just one game behind Cochise College. Central Arizona has a large lead in the conference. Live broadcasts of MCC baseball games, along with archived games from other MCC sporting events, are available at swsportsnet.com. Track Yet MCC has already qualified nine athletes while still expecting to nominate more. The qualifiers so far include Colin Post and Clifford Starks in the shot put. Bonnie Jacobs, Jill Martinez, and Robin Brimley are in for the pole vault. Clay Olson is in for hammer throw, while Michael Rivers made it in the javelin throw. Christina Sergi qualified in the 5000-meter run. |
