MESA LEGEND
Submitted April 24, 2001

Dear Legend,

Is a teacher who refuses to answer a student’s question really teaching?

In a subject of math, it is often necessary to ask questions when one is lost (in a formula).

All students learn formulas for one reason – their grade.

Hence, if a student is trying to understand a difficult formula, even if it is easy for every other student, a teacher, by definition, should take the time to answer any questions.

What do you do with a teacher who is demeaning and abusive to his/her students, or a teacher who displays irritation when questioned and openly belittles a student in front of a class?

There is a teacher in the MCC math department who is demeaning and rude.

I believe she thinks she is comical.

I am pleading with this teacher to stop the insults and belittlement of slower students – they are trying too.

Please do not ruin a young student’s image of school.

You may affect them to the point that they may never want to come back.

Teachers are role models and they must remember this at all times.
