Womens golf leads conference, has top two playersBY AARON CARPENTER With five out-of-state players, the womens golf team has broken onto the Arizona golf scene.
Led by Coach John Guerrero, the team has risen to the top of their conference and boasts the two top players. The T-Birds took the top three places and broke Pimas nine match winning streak at the Phoenix Invitational at Encanto Golf Course on April 3. This is the first year they have had a full squad of women golfers at MCC. The T-Birds top player is freshman Beatrice Conti, who grew up in Caracas, Venezuela and began golfing at the age of eight. Coach Guerrero recognized Contis talent, and offered her a spot on the womens team. Conti is talking to Linda Volstead, coach of the ASU womens golf team, about transferring to ASU next year. Conti won the first two tournaments of the year, placed second to teammate Katie Wold in the third tournement, and won again in their last event at Palm Valley golf course. At Palm Valley, Conti shot a course record 68, five strokes better then the previous womens record at the course. "She is something special," Guerrero said. "Her attitude, with a capital A makes her a great golfer. "You have girls that play golf and you have golfers. She (Conti) is a golfer. Its just a joy to watch." Conti is a psychology major and wants to practice sports psychology as a career. Conti believes that sports psychology has helped her concentration and approach to the game of golf. Close on Contis heals is Katie Wold, one of only two players from last years team. Wold is from Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Her dad, also a golfer, felt an individual sport would do her good, so she took up the sport as a freshman in high school. Katie loves Arizona golf because of the year-round conditions and the challenging desertcourses. Wold is in talks with coaches at Sam Houston University in Texas about continuing her collegiate career there. At MCC, Wold has a 4.0 GPA while majoring in accounting. "She (Wold) epitomizes what a student athlete should be," Coach Guerrero said. "She is the first one here and last one to leave. She makes everybody else a good player." |
