Men’s Tennis
For first year Coach Becky Opoien, the season got underway with the tough challenge of getting her players to forget about the loss of their previous coach, and move on and adjust to her coaching techniques.

Once the season started and the team played in a few matches, Opoien said everyone settled down and her team went on to capture second place in the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference.

"It was a different experience coaching males rather than females," Opoien said. "The guy’s are more competitive and seem more focused."

MCC also finished second in the Region 1 tournament on April 9, which qualified six players for the NJCAA tournament on May 6. The players that qualified are Ted Yeager, Kevin Clark, Tom Young, Zach Hatch, Ryan O’Conell, and Josh Cahalan.

Women’s Tennis
The T-Birds, who tied for first place in the conference with Glendale this season, prevailed in the Region 1 tournament because of outstanding doubles play, and will now move on to the NJCAA tournament held in Tucson on May 6.

MCC’s number one, two, and three-seeded doubles teams all were victorious in the tournment.

Freshman Laura Goutcher was the only T-Bird to win a singles region title.

Softball
The MCC softball team is battling for playoff seeding as they have already clinched a playoff birth for the region tourney starting on April 28.

The top four teams in conference qualify for the region tournament. The T-Birds are tied for third place with Eastern Arizona College, but MCC will not be able to catch either Central Arizona or Western Arizona, who are tied for first with only two losses in the conference.

MCC has been the best team out of the Maricopa Community Colleges this season, and has a 36-18 overall record, and 23-9 conference record.
