Members of ASMCC learned a valuable lesson during the first-ever meeting of the Student Senate—democracy takes more than an hour.

Student Senator William Ho makes his point clear during one of the many spirited debates of the ASMCC Student Senate meeting.

The Sept. 13 meeting was a mish-mash of introductions, misunderstandings and power plays which lasted well past the meeting’s scheduled hour. Confusion about what constitution they were operating under and how to use the adopted rules of order dominated the proceedings.

While first-time senators stumbled over the rules of order, experienced senators Nick Matiella and William Ho attempted to push toward voting on bills around since the summer.

"People are antsy," ASMCC President Spencer Ellingson said.

According to some, Ellingson isn’t antsy enough. Matiella and Ho attempted to pass a bill that would have taken the power to appoint commissioners from Ellingson, claiming he is taking too long  to make appointments.

"I don’t think they have any devious intent," ACMCC Vice President Fabricio Rodriguez said.

Ellingson got the message as he promised to make the appointments a priority. "More action will be taken," Ellingson said. All the bills were tabled until the next meeting.

ASMCC will sponsor e-groups on the Internet in an effort to stir discussion and keep senators informed on meetings and events.

Student senators are appointed by the members of official MCC clubs.

The senators will vote on proposed bills, manage club funding and pass resolutions on issues of concern to students.

ASMCC has also filled out its executive branch with the appointments of Alonka Sokolova vice president of communications and Will Stanley vice president of fiscal affairs.
