South campus safe haven for MCC garbage

The closely trimmed bushes and manicured grass of MCC’s campus suggests a clean and healthy learning environment. But, a closer look may uncover a few blemishes.

Behind a 15-foot wall of dirt hides this mess of MCC garbage waiting to be disposed of.

One eyesore, in particular, is located behind the south parking lot, next to the welding building. Just west of the building is a 15-foot high wall of dirt. Behind the dirt is where MCC’s grounds crew puts clippings and shrubs to biodegrade into mulch.

However, recently the area has been contaminated with non-biodegradable garbage — like the distinct blue colored bags of MCC trash — littering the area.

"Everybody’s got a back area a little less than they want it to be," Dean of Administrative Services Ron Etter said.

With 145 acres of land, and only 11 grounds crew personnel, the area is not on the top of Etter’s list to clean up. "The site has always been a problem, but has gotten a little worse with the construction programs."

MCC used the area last year as a collection site for old Christmas trees. Unfortunately, according to Etter, the trees collected were set on fire.

For now, Etter said it will be up to the MCC maintenance crew to separate the trash from what is biodegradable.

While Facility Manager Rudy Mendez could not be reached for comment on when his department will correct the situation, Etter said, "It ís one of those things that is as we get to it."
