Uncomfortable request

MESA LEGEND
Submitted September 19, 2000

Dear Legend,

I am a big beautiful woman (BBW). There are decisions I have to make on a regular basis because of my size. I never thought one of those decisions would be if I could attend school this year because of the seat size.

I arrived for class and was horrified. The chairs remind me of grade school, and even the thinner students are uncomfortable. I had to take the handicapped seat, hoping no one with a disability would arrive.

Not everyone of size (including pregnant women and football player types and BHM’s — Big Handsome Men) would feel comfortable asking for larger seats. Are we not allowed to attend school until we are thinner or more socially acceptable?? Do we have no right to be here, because we are fat?

I hope that students and faculty will support the larger (and increasing) number of people like me that have so much to offer, and are often overlooked or degraded because of our size.

I also hope to create a change in seating on campus. I will be petitioning and presenting some suggestions that can help. I am even thinking of starting a BBW/BHM fat accep-tance group here on campus.
