Men’s Soccer: Two overtime victories propel men into soccer Region I finals

The MCC men’s soccer team went into regionals with a 13-7 record this season. They played their first region game against Arizona Western College, who they had already won against twice in regular conference season.

With only two and a half minutes before half time, AWC scored a goal.  The game stayed at a score of 1-0 until  42 seconds left in the game when MCC’s Clint Crockett tied the score.

The contest went into a sudden death, where it didn’t take Brian Ronan long to score the winning goal for the Thunderbirds.

The win moved the men on to the regional semi-final game that was hosted at Pima Community College in Tucson on Oct 28.

This game was huge for the men because not only did they lose to Pima in their conference games this season, but also it was PCC that ended their season in the regional semi-final a season ago.

Since the women’s game against Scottsdale was scheduled for the same day as the men’s game against Pima, it was decided that assistant coaches Ken Parsons and Jason Green would be sent to Tucson to coach the men, as Head Coach Danny Sanchez coached the women.

There was almost a repeat of the Arizona Western game, when Pima scored in the first half.  With less than three minutes left in the second half, David Hunter tied the game for the T-Birds, sending the game into overtime.

With no change in the score, the two teams went into three more overtimes, adding an extra hour to the game. After the fourth overtime expired, a shootout was played to break up the tie.

The Thunderbirds’ best shooters, and goalie Chris Marshburn were able to show off their skills and won the game against Pima.

“We ended up winning it in Pima, our biggest rival, our arch nemesis, to go to the finals against Yavapai,” David Hunter said.

Green felt that the thunderbirds did well with a good solid performance, “We were the team with more heart. We haven’t played our best match of the year by far, but everything came together today.”
