The women’s soccer team went into regionals with a 16-2-2 record this season. Their first regional game was against Pima Community College at MCC. In the middle of the first half, Pima took the lead 1-0.

Heather Bobb tied the game with only three minutes remaining in the second half.

“We were the better team the whole way,” Kori Moore said. “We just needed to step it up a little bit.”

In sudden death overtime, it looked as though Mesa had won it with an attempt by Moore. After the ball went in, the referee called offsides on Mesa and disallowed the goal.

The already suspenseful game carried into a second overtime where Kristen Purpura scored the winning goal to end the game 2-1.

“We were the better team I feel,”  Bobb said. “We played with heart and that’s the reason we won.”

The ladies then went on to their region one final game hosted by Scottsdale Community College. This time the ladies suffered a 1-2 loss ending their season.

Many of the Thunderbirds agreed that a lack of communication was their downfall in the game. “We were playing individually instead of as a team, and I think we went in there kind of cocky,” said Colleen Fellin.

“We played well,” said Danny Sanchez, who coaches both men and women at MCC.

“We’re the top two teams in the league, and the game could have gone either way.  Unfortunately, it wasn’t our day.”
