Christmas lightsDowntown Mesa will celebrate its second annual “A Merry Main Street!” event 5:30 to 9  p .m.  Dec. 1 on Main Street between Country Club and Center streets. It will feature Santa Claus’ arrival on a historic Mesa fire engine, a diverse array of holiday music and entertainment, a children’s play area filled with 50 tons of snow, and Mesa Mayor Keno Hawker throwing the switch to activate the downtown area’s award-winning holiday light display. Winter Adopt-A-Family
The Winter Holiday Adopt-A-Family program benefits MCC students and their families who are in need of assistance.

Nominate a student or encourage students who you know might be in need to apply. Faculty/staff nominations of students are due to Nora Aguilar in the Student Activities Department by Nov. 27 and all self nominations and applications are due  Dec. 4. Gourmet Brunch
The Banner Health Foundation of Arizona will host “Savor the Flavor,” a gourmet brunch featuring dishes from more than a dozen of the top restaurants and chefs in the Valley and live entertainment by local jazz performer Margo Reed, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 26 at the Conference Center in the Chaparral Suites Hotel at 5001 N. Scottsdale Road, located at the northeast corner of Scottsdale Road and Chaparral.
Tickets are $50 per person, children 12 and under are $15, and children 5 and under are free. Proceeds benefit heart patients and Banner Health Arizona cardiology programs. For tickets, call (602) 495-6359.

Diabetes Prevention
The Community Health Advocate Certificate Program (CHA) will have a reception 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 30 in the Kirk Center’s Kiva Room.

The diabetes prevention and education program was developed by Maricopa Community Colleges Foundation in conjunction with the Native American Community Health Center, Inc. (NACHC) and received a three year grant from the St. Luke’s Charitable Health Trust. For information, call (480) 461-7154.

University Admission Information
Meetings providing information on competency requirements for admission to ASU, NAU, or U of A will be 10 and 11:30 a.m., Nov. 28 and 1:30 and 3 p.m., Dec. 7 in the Kirk Center’s Maricopa Room.

‘A Christmas Carol’
Actors Theatre of Phoenix will be performing Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” adapted by Michael Grady and Producing artistic director Matthew Wiener with music and lyrics by Alan Ruch.

Performances will be Dec. 2 through Dec. 23 at 7 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and 2 p.m. matinees on Sundays at the Herberger Theater, 222 E. Monroe, located between Second and Third streets, in Phoenix.

‘The Laundry’
MCC’s winter play, “The Laundry,” directed by Beverly Byrd, will be 8 p.m. Dec. 7 through 9 and 2 p.m.  Dec. 10 at the Theatre Outback.

Tickets are  $5 for MCC students; $7 for MCC faculty, staff, alumni or students under 18; and $8 for the general public. All tickets must be reserved. The Box Office, TH1, is open 1:30 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. For tickets and information, call (480) 461-7170.

Film Festival
The SunBurst Resort Scottsdale Independent Film Fest, hosted by Emanuel Levy, a senior film critic for Variety magazine, will be held at the Scottsdale Center for the Arts, 7380 E. Second St., in Scottsdale.

The 7 p.m.,  Nov. 27 portion of the festival will include a showing of Everything Put Together (1999) with director/writer Marc Forster in attendance.

The 6:30 p.m., Dec. 11  portion will include a tribute to director Robert Altman who will receive a Scottsdale Film Achievement Award and one of his movies, Nashville (1975), will be shown. Altman’s 75th birthday and Nashville’s 25th anniversary will be celebrated as well.
Tickets will be sold at $10 or $6 for students. The evening offers an introduction by Levy and the writer or director, a 35mm screening of the film, and an interview and question-and-answer session with the writer or director afterward. Jazz Concert
The ASU Jazz Repertory Band will be performing 7:30 p.m. , Nov. 21 in the Katzin Concert Hall, 40 E. Gammage Parkway, located in ASU’s Music Building at the corner of Mill Avenue and Gammage Parkway directly north of the Gammage Auditorium, in Tempe. Holiday Concert

Debate Tournament
Speech and Debate tournaments will be 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Dec. 1 through 3. The Dec. 1 event will be in the Student Union Building at  Glendale Community College, 6000 W. Olive, located at the northwest corner of 59th Avenue and Olive.

The Dec. 2 and 3 events will be in the Language and Literature buildings on the ASU main campus in Tempe.

Journalist Honored

Incident Log

Information provided by MCC College Safety

Oct. 30
Between Oct. 11 and Oct. 30, a Panasonic 27 inch television valued at $580, was stolen from the LA Building.

A female student fainted while working out in MCC’s Fitness Center. Paramedics were called. She was advised to seek private medical assistance and she agreed to do so.

Oct. 31
Mesa police arrested an MCC student as the result of an apparent Halloween prank. Police said he was reported to have pointed a toy gun at some people near Dobson High School. Using a license plate number provided by someone at the school, police traced him to MCC and charged him with disorderly conduct.

Nov. 2
A contractor doing work at MCC accidentally backed his truck into a fence, south of the welding area. Damage is estimated to be $100.

Nov. 4
Mesa police are investigating the theft of an unknown amount of valuables from a visiting team’s locker room at MCC during a football game that evening.

 

Speech/debate team wins awards
MCC Speech/debate members travel all over the country competin against colleges and universities during the August through April season.
