Mr. Grinch strikes againLEGEND'S VIEW
The school session ends on Dec. 22, which means that while students at Arizonas other colleges and universities are traveling, attending parties, shopping and relaxing, were taking finals. Family will arrive in town and well be too busy with school work to welcome them. ASU students will throw parties and well have to miss them. Winter break usually begins at least a week or more earlier allowing time to prepare for and enjoy the holidays. Ending the semester late in the month is not only inconvenient, it is extremely unfair. Hanukkah starts on Dec. 22, which means that Jewish students have no time to prepare, and if they have to travel to be with family, they are forced to miss part of the holiday. Students who have to travel to be with family for the holidays will only have a very short time to do so, meaning they have to come up with the extra funds for the more expensive methods of travel that are necessary. Another unfair effect of a late fall semester is that students who may have friends or family graduating from other colleges or universities will have to miss that very monumental occasion. Also, any students transferring to ASU next semester have at least a week cut off their winter break. We are expected to study for finals under much less than ideal conditions. Administrators should expect a dip in grades this semester and that doesnt look good for anyone.Of course, its not just students that are affected by the late semester our instructors have to suffer right along with us. Unfortunately, none of the administrators we spoke to could give a reason for putting together this illogical schedule. However, they at least realize its a mistake, as Dean of Instruction, Gail Mee admitted, "I dont think anyone realized what had happened before it got away from us." Just as the Grinch was eventually able to find the Christmas spirit, so has our administration. Dean Mee assured us that next year we will go back to our old calendar. For now, well have to get in as much holiday preparation that we can cram into the two free days we have before Christmas. However you choose to celebrate, we, at the Mesa Legend, wish you a very happy holiday. |
