Phi Theta Kappa’s Omicron Beta Chapter added 94 more students, which includes eight officers, to its list of inducted in a ceremony held on Oct. 13.

This ceremony was conducted in the Mesquite Building of MCC at Red Mountain.

The theme for the event was "customs, traditions and community," and as such, the speeches that were given concentrated on this theme.

The induction started with a traditional Native American blessing by Garrison Tahmahkera, MCC’s director of the American Indian Center.

MCC President Larry Christiansen, and Dean of Instruction Gail Mee were guest speakers included at the ceremony.

"It’s rare that you get so many important people together to speak in one place," said Duane Oakes, an adviser for the club. "We were very excited to have them there."

The club holds an induction ceremony for new members every semester after final grades for the previous semester are reported.

Phi Theta Kappa, (PTK), is an honor society concentrated around two-year colleges, and has specific academic requirements in order for a student to be considered for admission.

PTK is the largest honor society in the American Association of Community Colleges, (AACC), with more than 1.5 million members and 1,100 chapters.

The AACC currently recognizes PTK as the official honor society for two-year colleges, according to Oakes.

Students hoping to join this society must rank in the top 20 percent of their class and maintain a 3.0 GPA after induction.
