Students Observing and Scrutinizing
What do you think about this?
BY Mesa Legend

On Sept. 16, 2001, Bill Maher, the host of ABC’s Politically Incorrect, stated his belief that the actions of the U.S. in Afghanistan were less than desirable. He said that it is "cowardly to fire cruise missiles." The White House responded with a demand that he immediately be pulled from the air. A few affiliates around the country pulled Politically Incorrect from their rotation, and Maher’s contract with Disney-owned ABC will most likely not be renewed after the 2002 season. What do you think of the government’s reaction to his remarks?

"It’s awfully fascist. Politically Incorrect is important simply because of First Amendment rights."
Jeff Turille 22, Undeclared
"He should have the right to say what he believes. I think it is wrong, they should allow views other than those that are popular."
Amanda Page 17, Graphic Design
"I think it’s wrong. Every-one in this country utilizes their freedom of speech. We’re al-lowed to say what we want but we can’t."
Shanna Lohrenz 20, Nursing

"He was just practicing his freedom of speech. I think that it’s wrong."
Cathy Simonson 21, Art
"Since they didn’t really do anything, they’re not wrong. I don’t think the government should get involved in entertainment though."
Stephen Webb 18, Undeclared
"I think it’s wrong. Whatever you say, you have a right to say that. The government shouldn’t control your power of speech."
Joey O’Barr 18, Undeclared
