History of Tree Decorating
The Mesa Southwest Museum will display Holiday Trees, a showing of tree decorations of the local region from the historic period of the HoHoKam Indians to modern times.

Parking is free, admission is $4 for adults, $3.50 for seniors (55+) and students (13+). Admission for children age 3-12 is $2, and free for children under 3 years of age.

Tempe Holiday Events
The Tempe Snow Day will take place Dec. 15 starting at 10 a.m. at Tempe Beach Park. The event will include 25 tons of snow, a skating rink, carnival rides, pictures with Santa and live entertainment.

The Tempe Town Lake Holiday Boat Parade, presented by Amica Insurance, will take place Dec. 15 as well. Entertainment will begin at 6:30 p.m. and the boat parade will launch at 7:30 p.m.

There will be a contest and award ceremony. All boats entered in the parade will be eligible to win a $1,000 cash prize. Tempe’s Fantasy of Lights on Mill Ave. will be on display through Jan. 7.

The Tempe Historical Museum will have a display of Holiday Decorations showing through Jan. 3. The display will involve Holiday trees with varying themes that can be seen in the museum’s lobby and exhibit hall.

MLK celebration
The city of Mesa will be hosting several events in honor of Martin Luther King.

• Jan. 15 there will be an interactive World Beat program with songs and stories about the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. entitled "I’ve Been to the Mountain Top." The program will start at 6:30 p.m. in the Main Library in the Saguaro Room. For more information, call (480) 644-2700.

• There will be an interfaith Candlelight Service Jan. 19, with music by local choirs and presentations by Mesa students. This event starts at 6 p.m. at the Trinity Baptist Church at 2130 E. University Drive. For more information, call (480) 507-0889.

• The MLK Parade will take place Jan. 21. The theme will be "One Song, One Hope, One Dream." The parade begins at 11 a.m. and will start at Hibbert and First St. and continue south on Hibbert.

The route will follow Main Street west to MacDonald, north to First Street, and east to Center Street. From there, the parade will head north to the Mesa Centennial Center, Mesa Amphitheater. For more information, call (480) 835-5875.

• The MLK Festival 2002 will take place at the Mesa Centennial Center, Mesa Amphitheater and will begin at the same time as the parade. There will be music, entertainment, food booths and vendors.

There will also be performances by many multi-cultural artists. The festival ends at 4 p.m. For more information, call (480) 644-2700.

All events are free and open to the public.

The Center
The Center, a unity bookstore, offers many events and activities sponsored by Unity of the Southwest. Dec. 9, 16 and 23 there will be guest vocalists performing at the Center.

Dec. 17 and Jan. 21 at 7 p.m. visitors at the Center will explore the multiple meanings of the text of the Lord’s Prayer in the Aramaic language spoken by Jesus. Rev. Jorge Rodriguez Eager of the Shrine of the Christ of Divine Life will facilitate the monthly meditation.

Dec. 12 at 7 p.m. there will be a Hanukkah Service which will feature the piano artistry of Jay Steinberg. The Center also offers a variety of classes. The Mindful Living Classes take place every Sunday at 9 a.m. Jan. 17, 24 and 31 at 7 p.m. Spiritual Astrology classes are available.
