The Sundome
Jan. 19 a trio of Broadway singers and an 11-member big band will pay tribute to Frank Sinatra. "Our Sinatra" will begin at 7:30 p.m. The evening will include more than 50 songs made famous by Sinatra including "Luck Be a Lady" and "My Kind of Town." Tickets are $17, $22, and $26.

Jan. 23 Swing Dance America will showcase such dances as the lindy, jive, jitterbug and many more. Tickets are $20, $25, and $30.

Both events will take place at the Sundome Center for the Performing Arts, Sun City West. For tickets and information ,contact the box office at (623) 975-1900.

Copper Quill
Are you headed for a major in Communications? The Copper Quill Awards might be the portfolio builder that you have been looking for.

IABC/Phoenix recognizes outstanding communicators through its Copper Quill Awards. This year, IABC/Phoenix is extending its call for entries to students.

Categories for entries include audiovisual, communication management, design/photography/illu-stration, electronic communication, publications and writing. The deadline for entries is March 25.

The awards will be announced May 16 at the Annual Copper Quill Awards banquet. The Student Copper Quill Awards are judged by a panel of communications professionals.

All undergraduate and graduate students are welcome to enter. There is an entry fee of $10. Each submission should include a completed entry form, a $10 check made out to IABC/Phoenix, a work plan and samples.

Stuff the Bus
Starting Jan. 14 the Valley Metro bus service will have improvements including local bus schedules and routes with more frequent service and later hours in Phoenix, Sunday and holiday service in Scottsdale, and eight extended routes in several cities.

Detailed information can be found in the new Valley Metro Bus Book, which can be found at about 1800 locations Valleywide including municipal libraries. It can also be found online at www.valleymetro.org.

As part of the improvements, Phoenix purchased 96 new buses and Tempe purchased four. The buses also have upgraded features like reflective glass windows, more comfortable passenger seats and better designed wheelchair ramps.

"Try Transit" week is Jan.14-18 and Valley Metro will be encouraging Valley residents to take the bus. As part of the promotional week, Valley Metro will have a "Stuff the Bus" event at several locations asking people to bring food donations for St. Mary’s Food Bank. Hoop Dance
The 12th Annual World Championship Hoop Dance Contest will take place Feb. 2 and 3 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Heard Museum. The final rounds to determine the world champion will begin Feb. 4 at noon. The hoop dance originated in Taos Pueblo and represents the Circle of Life and the never-ending cycle of life’s renewal.

Admission for each day of this event is $7 for general admission, $6 for seniors (65+), $3 for children (4-12), $5 for Heard Museum members and Native Americans with proof of tribal enrollment and free for children under 4. Mesa Arts Center
The Mesa Arts Center schedule for January includes the Off Center Dance Concert Jan. 18-19 at 7:30 p.m. tickets are $5. Jan. 22-March 9, the 24th Annual Contemporary Crafts will take place Tuesday-Friday from noon to 8 p.m. and Saturday noon to 5 p.m.

This event is free and open to the public. The MAC Movies 8 series will continue with a showing of Peking Opera Blues at 7 p.m. Jan. 25. This event is also free.

NAACP Events
The NAACP faculty, staff and student luncheon will take place Jan. 23 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Kiva Room. For more information, conact Dr. Karen Hardin at (480) 461-7584.
