"Rain, Rain go away come again another day."
Softball players may have been reminded of this childhood rhyme,
due to the poor weather conditions.
The rain minimized the teams practice time prior to their
double header against Phoenix College on March 1.
Mesa lost the first game by the score of 10.
Laura Chomokos pitched a great game, allowing no earned runs.
The Thunderbirds just could not string any hits together to put
some points on the board.
The only run of the game came on a double steal.
With runners on first and third Thunderbird catcher, Jen Wright,
threw for the runner attempting to steal second, which allowed the
runner on third to sneak in for one run and the ball game.
Chomokos, who has been pitching brilliantly this season, discussed
her success, "I just try to get three up and three down every
inning and let my defense take care of the rest. I know that my
team will back me up.
I have confidence in our offense too, I know if I allow a hit our
team will answer back with a couple of hits."
The second game was more exciting, yet yielded the same result,
a one run loss.
Jen Wright made up for her error in the first game by sending one
ball screaming over the fence.
"We needed some runs, and I just wanted to get on base,"
Wright said about her homerun.
It didn't prove to be enough though as Mesa dropped the second game
by a final score of 32.
Wright talked about the team's performance, "We didn't have
a full week of practice due to the rain, and I think that hurt us
because we could not get our bats going."
Ashley Wisecarver agreed saying, "we just couldnt get
any hits, they (PCC) just out hit us when it counted."
The Ladies are not going to let this brief storm slow them down
though.
"All these losses are going to do is make us come back even
stronger against Eastern Arizona," stated Wright.
The women began the season at an lighting fast pace of 71.
The two losses to Phoenix dropped them to 73, and will give
coach Dewight Byron the first look at how his team handles diversity.
