Letter to the Editor
I am responding to the proposed tuition increase.
I dont agree with a $5 increase for several reasons.
One, the classes I need to take for my degree are not offered at a convenient
time (or semester) for me to take them.
Nothing in the article mentioned anything about offering more classes
at different times and I do not want to pay more to be inconvenienced.
Two, if they plan to use some of the money for scholarships then, obviously,
education at MCC is a financial burden for some.
Why increase tuition?
This would only make it harder for even more students to afford an education.
Lastly, the comment that (Linda Rosenthal) made about students using their
scholarship money to go to McDonalds or to buy a CD, is a very gross
exaggeration.
I work full time, raise a family, and have a full class load.
I need scholarship money just to attend, and with my schedule I can not
add more hours at work let alone go out to eat.
As far as buying a CD is concerned, the last time I bought a CD was three
years ago.
If you expect students to support an increased tuition, try not to insult
them with derogatory, generalized comments like that.
Because of one board members apparent distrust of students, they
do not have my support.
Erin Berry
(an already broke, frustrated, and very busy student)
