Both Thunderbird basketball teams earned themselves a spot in the 2003 ACCAC playoffs, both faced rival Scottsdale Community College, and both lost.

The only difference being their respective scores and locations.
The women lost at home 69-50, while the men lost on the road 67–62.

The lady Thunderbirds led the game most of the first half, and then just before halftime the Artichokes tied the game up at 31.

The second half was all SCC, dominating both offensive and defensive rebounding.

The Artichokes came out of the locker room with a vengeance.

SCC’s tenacious defense, coupled with poor Thunderbird shooting caused MCC to score only 19 points in the entire second half.

Coach Pam Olerich had this to say regarding her team's season, "We were young this year, but we have most of our girls returning next year, giving us a good nucleus for next season."

The men's game came down to the closing minutes just as the other two games against SCC had.

Down by 3 with 40 seconds to play the Thunderbirds were forced to begin fouling and hoping for some SCC misses that would give them a chance to win the game.

Doug D'Amore stepped up to the line for SCC and drained 2 free throws sealing the victory for the Artichokes, and ending MCC's men's basketball season.

Coach Alton Lister discussed the season saying, "It was a weird year with a lot of ups and downs."

He added, "It took us awhile to get comfortable playing with each other because we had so many freshmen, but I think the second half we really put it together and made the playoffs in the face of adversity."

Lister also mentioned the athletes who will not be playing for him any longer, stating, "We have some guys who are going to be hard to replace, not because of their points or rebounding, but because they are good people, guys like Hakeem Rollins, Tarek Abdala, and Charles Dairman, I am going to miss them."

So will the fans.
