get a closer look at a medical evacuation helicopter during the Water
Safety Day held at Glendale Community College. |
As the Arizona air heats up, people are seeking relief from the weather
in the comfort of swimming pools.
Every year, the Phoenix area loses children to the pools that provide
comfort in the summers.
Glendale Community College filled a field with elementary students and
firefighters from across the valley.
Students watched safety demonstrations provided by the firemen and volunteers.
In 2002, Phoenix Fire Department reported the drowning deaths of 12 children.
Nearly 100 drowning incidents were handled by the department.
To protect children, the fire department advocates constant supervision,
child barriers, alarms around swimming pools, CPR training, and water
safety training for children.
A number of similar safety events are scheduled in the coming weeks.
Annual Water Safety day, which takes place June 17, includes events at
Target stores all over the state.
A Target employee, Eli Nejat, lost his son in 1997 to a drowning accident
and the company responded by establishing a safety program for other children.
Peoria, Scottsdale, Mesa, Tempe, and Apache Junction fire departments
are all hosting safety days on April 26 at various locations.
