a play had been labeled "highly literate, ingenious and intelligent"who
would not want to see it? Well now is everyones chance. MCC's
theater department will be performing Tom Stoppard's Arcadia.
The play takes place in only one room in an English estate. The plot
alternates between the 19th century and the present day. The story
moves through the torrid series of events until the collide at the
end of the play.
Lady Thomasina who is a 13 year old student that falls in love with
her tutor. The two develop a relationship where they speak of romance
and the universe. The present day part of the plot consists of two
competing modern scholars who are uncovering the story of the young
girl. They then begin to discover that certain things plague man regardless
of time.
The play is based on mathematical theorems, but is a comedy. The dialogue
is crisp and light, while sewing its' intellectual seed. The play
operates on several levels at once, so even those who do not understand
the mathematics of the play can enjoy the story.
MCC's production of Arcadia is directed by Lyn Dutson. Tickets are
available in the Theater Outback box office for $10 for students.
