Cultures focus of interior design

Janice Jennings, an interior design instructor at MCC, had an article published in the January edition of “Teaching for Success.”

The article was titled “How to Teach a Cultural Point of Reference in Design”.

The article was an outcome of one of her students exclaiming that there are no African American motifs in any of the wall paper design.

Jennings who was faced with starting and preparing a new course called Custom Design, decided to incorporate culture to custom design.

Carrie Durham, a second year interior design major said, “She goes above and beyond students expectation and I have never seen her sad, mad or unhappy. She is always happy and she is also excited and enthusiastic with us. I have three classes with her and I am thankful that I have her and no one else.”

Jennings allowed her students to use their creativity and imagination to design their own custom rugs.

She also wanted to bring out the diverse cultural customs, beliefs, traditions, and lifestyles of her culturally diverse group of interior design students.

“Not only did we learn how to make custom rugs, but we also learned a lot about many different cultures.” said Jennings."

Linda Cheng an interior design major, designed her custom rug called Double Double, Couple Couple to express and reflect her emotions and thoughts for the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

“Janice Jennings, she is a thoroughly dedicated and creative teacher who is very supportive. She knows her information well and she is also the only teacher who I know that buys the students project to hang on her wall,” said Debbie Guggisberg, interior design major.
