Students from as far as Lake Havasu and Flagstaff to Sahuarita attended
the competition to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in various program
areas.
SkillsUSA is a national organization for students enrolled in trade, technical,
service, or health care courses.
The program was very challenging. We were given three projects that
were timed and we were given machines that we never used before,
Jerry Carter, a gold medalist for Precision Machining, declared.
The competition kicked off on Monday, April 21 at the Hyatt Hotel with
student competitions in the fields of Total Quality Management, Health
Knowledge Bowl, Extemporaneous Speaking and Job Interviewing.
On Tuesday, April 22 the competition moved to a different location.
The event continued at the Arizona State Fairground with different competing
programs.
Students competed for recognition for their skills in medical terminology,
precision machining, fire fighting, criminal justice, culinary arts, computer
maintenance technology, auto body repair, and CO2 cars.
The competition closed with the final events held at the Phoenix Civic
Plaza.
An award ceremony recognized those students who took first, second and
third place in the competitions.
A total of 11 students from MCC attended the competition.
Two students placed in Precision Machining taking both first and third
place.
For automotive service technology, MCC students earned first, second and
third place.
Students that placed are invited to attend and participate in the national
competition which is scheduled for late June in Kansas City, Missouri.
MCCs automotive department and Honeywell will provide funding for
those students who are attending the nationals to compete.
The national is going to be a lot more challenging then the state.
Basically their bringing in a lot more technology so we are going to be
doing a lot more technical hands on skill, said Eric Greenbank.
Greenback received a gold medal for first place in the area of the automotive
service technology.
