Night relay helps cancer society

The American Cancer Society kicked off their signature fundraiser with the annual “Relay for Life” on May 3 and 4 at Mesa High School.

The relay ran from 6pm on May 3 p.m. and continued on until 7 a.m. the next day.

Each team consisted of eight or more people with a required team member walking the track at all times.

Many teams and local restaurants donated food for the participants, with live entertainment to liven up the event.

All of the proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society to support funding for research as well as to help those who are victims of cancer and their families.

At sundown a luminaria ceremony was held, with each luminaria honoring a survivor or the memory of one of the thousands lost to cancer every year.

“This observance is very emotional and healing,” said Hazel Hicks, a participant in this year’s event. “Cancer never sleeps and for one night we won’t either.”
