Editor’s Note: Upcoming editions of the Mesa Legend will spotlight a new local band, showcasing the wide range of talent that resides in the Valley.

Straight from suburbs of Mesa, is a newly refreshed band that is swiftly growing in popularity across the nation, Authority Zero.

Before signing with their current label, Lava Records, Zero gained recognition here in Arizona by playing five nights a week, advertising heavily for shows and building a fan base that made their 2001 EP a best selling local CD.

Their recent album release, A Passage in Time, is their first involvement with a major label and features the already released song One More Minute.

“The change from a local venue to a national band hasn’t jaded their perspectives, if it all,” said Bill Marcks, who has gained a different insight into how bands are run on a national level.

After Zero composes some beginning sound, the band “tweaks it with rhythm, adds flavor, and then twists it around and makes it kinda’ wacky,” said Marcks about Zero’s creative techniques. Marcks said that Zero also tries to throw things in their music to keep listeners wondering what new peak will blast from the woofers next.

Marcks added, “That don’t make sense, and aren’t supposed to be there, to keep the audience interested in the sound,” is the main recipe for this semi-punk genre. The styling of Zero has drawn comparisons to bands like Offspring and sometimes Sublime.

Zero has had a diverse list of venues that they have performed at in Arizona, but the band still holds tight to their roots claiming this is the best place to play. Their recent CD release party was one of Marck’s most memorable shows taking place Boston’s Pizza in Tempe.

The show running on high energy and good music Marcks commented that he had never seen Boston’s Pizza that packed before.

Accompanied with a crowd surfing snowman and a small injury to vocalist Jason Devore involving a roof accident the performance went off without a hitch. In the past, Zero has performed several shows here at MCC. With some of the members even attending school here, many students may feel a certain attachment to the band. Created here in AZ and forever faithful Authority Zero rises to the top of the billboards.
