Vapid sports attendance creates hole
Danny Alcocer, Sports Editor
By Danny Alcocer
Sports Editor

The black hole!

That's what some MCC athletes are calling the stands at athletic events these days.

Attendance at any athletic event here at Mesa Community College is scarce, and that may even be giving too much credit.

I've seen more people show up to watch the grass grow than I've seen at the sporting events here.

You would think that with more than 25,000 students that some of them would accidentally wander into the stands.

Nope, not the case. The only folks in the stands are other MCC athletes who feel sorry for the poor attendance and feel obligated to show some kind of support for their fellow athletes.

Many athletic arenas boast that their sixth man is the crowd. Not MCC. Our sixth man is the custodian who is required to be at the game because the school makes him.

This is my cry to MCC students to come out and support their athletic teams; you might be surprised and actually become a fan.
Will somebody please show up for a game. For heaven’s sake people, is American Idol all that important?

Why not take an hour out of your day to go see a basketball game?
They probably won’t even charge you admission.

Right now, the fans, if you can call them that, get about as loud as the audience at a Golden Girls reunion.

I mean I thought the Montreal Expos were bad. We can barely get 30 people at a basketball game. Please, I am urging all you students to show some love for your school, and give a hooray!
