Panel seeks to remodel Kirk; ax arcade, add Hall
of Flags
By Matt Mueller
Mesa Legend
The Associated Students of MCC has proposed big changes for spring semester.
ASMCC, the student elected, student run government on campus, has been
working on plans for updating and improving many of the more populated
areas of the campus.
It began with the formation of a Campus Beautification Committee, a student
run committee which conducts polls to find out what students want changed
on campus. Ideas are received through traditional polls, web polls, and
suggestions given to committee members. The student committee gathers
plans and proposals and presents them to the faculty committee for Campus
Beautification, where the proposals will be reviewed for feasibility and
then voted on.
According to Art Betancourt, the president of the student government,
remodeling the Kirk Center has been a high priority for the committee.
The proposed plan calls for the expansion of the dining area. This will
be done by removing the wall that currently separates the coffee bar from
the Thunderbird Café. This will create a much larger place for
the students to gather, and allow more students to take advantage of the
facility.
The removal of the video arcade is another big part of the proposed plan.
The current video games would be removed and replaced with a pool table,
air hockey table, and foosball table.
Yeah, I think that getting rid of those videogames is a great idea,
no one ever plays those things anyway, said Jordan Warner, a music
student.
New color schemes and decorations are also in order for a more modern
look. Interior Design students provided sketches and proposals for how
to remodel the Kirk Center, many of which have provided the most significant
ideas for the project.
A Hall of Flags is another anticipated improvement which has
been suggested. The plan calls for the addition of approximately 30 flags
from various countries around the world representing the home countries
of MCC students and alumni. An MCC flag to fly along side of the state
and American Flag would be created. Currently, the state and American
flags fly in front of the Administration Building.
The creation of a hall of flags would call for the flags to be relocated
to the rose garden, where they would be arranged either in a semi-circle
or possibly in a straight line, said Betancourt. This would
provide a display for the community and for the students to see many world
flags, and for MCC to display its diversity.
