Prescott
Even though Prescott is only a 90-minute drive from Phoenix, visitors
who make the journey to the small city feel like they are in a different
part of the country. That's because Prescott, with its tree-lined
streets and Victorian-style homes, has more of a Midwestern character,
thanks to its early settlers who arrived from the Midwest and New
England in the mid to late 1800’s. Today, Prescott is known
as a city rich in culture, as evidenced by its numerous art galleries,
museums, and antique shops. It also has plenty to offer in its outdoor
activities, as well as in night life.
For those people who are interested in the historical and cultural
background of Prescott, the Sharlot Museum might be a good place
to start. Made up of nine buildings, the museum gives an in-depth
look at what Prescott was like in its early days, with displays
highlighting the city’s Native American heritage, cowboy culture,
and military history. Other cultural attractions in Prescott include
the Smoki Museum, which is home to a vast collection of Southwest
Native American artifacts, the Phippen Museum, which houses paintings,
sketches, and other art that celebrates Western heritage, and the
Heritage Park Zoo, home to some of the more popular creatures in
the Southwest.
Prescott also has plenty to offer in shopping and entertainment.
Whiskey Row, located across the street from the Courthouse Plaza
in the heart of downtown, is probably Prescott's most famous street.
It features a row of over 30 merchants, offering everything from
bars to old-style saloons to antique shops and other specialty stores.
Some of the main attractions include the Palace Restaurant, Cadillac
Bar and Grill, and the Whiskey Row Mall. Just a short drive from
Whiskey Row is Bucky's Casino, which offers live action poker, 7-card
stud, and 300 slot machines to go with its food and live entertainment.
For those looking to spend the night in Prescott, there are plenty
of options to choose from, including historic hotels like the Hotel
Vendrome ($79 per night for single or double occupancy, $119 for
two-bedroom suites), or the St. Michael Hotel ($69-$109 depending
on room size). Or you can stay at a more modern hotel like the Hampton
Inn (rates starting at $79 a night).
