Suspect arrested in fraud

A man who is accused of using the identity of prisoners to obtain financial aid in the Maricopa Community College District was apprehended at the MCC campus on Sept. 5.
According to Captain of College Safety, Lynn Bray, the accused man may have received approximately $20,000 in fraudulent aid but admits that the investigation is just getting under way and there are “more questions than answers right now.”
The suspect was booked as 62-year-old John Edward Christensen and is wanted for using the scam at other colleges as well as at MCC.
He received his first illegitimate check through this district in August 1999, and is believed by College Safety to have used seven identities or more to receive money.
Since April of this year College Safety in cooperation with the financial aid department have been searching for the suspect by using a student ID that had Christensen’s picture on it, according to Bray.
When a student employee working in financial aid recognized the suspect from the picture she contacted College Safety.
Christensen was stopped after a short chase and detained. .
