Letter to the Editor
After reading your article in the Legend on Sept. 16, I realized that some of the changes that have been made here at MCC may have gone unnoticed. In the last three years we have eliminated the "red rider," a work cart that was gas-operated, made a lot of noise, expelled gas fumes into the air and consumed a lot of gas. At one time we had 10 of these carts on campus. We have opted to use electric carts. These are quiet, clean and environmentally friendly. We also have installed battery-operated time clocks on the flower beds to eliminate the overuse of water. While these time clocks are still new to us and we are still learning how to best use them in water conservation, I feel that we have made big strides in bringing our water consumption down. MCC uses flood irrigation to water because the water is cheap, does not cut into the domestic water budget and is more conservative than using domestic water to keep large lawn areas and trees alive and healthy. While I like the idea of Xeriscape, I say "hurray" for grass and trees that we have here on campus. I don't see too many people laying under a desert tree in the Xeriscape area to cool off and study their homework. Grass and trees play a big role in keeping our air clean and the temperatures down. Personally I am very proud to be a part of the MCC staff that have our sights on doing what is best for Arizona in conserving water and fuel.

David Killian,
Lead Groundskeeper
