MCC’s opening fall show “Life is a Dream” will have its second weekend run on Oct. 17 and 18 at 7:30 pm, and a matinee Oct. 19 at 2:00pm. The show runs 2 hours, including intermission, at the Theatre Outback, Black Box Green room TH 2.
The show is set in the times of the early Renaissance and was originally written in 1630. The version produced here at MCC was adapted by Laird Williamson, and is written in a more timely language than the original.
“ I think the audience will enjoy the show. It’s not a tragedy, and it mixes some comedy with drama. It does make you think. In the 21st century, the significance of what point do leaders commands become illegal is something we see today. Maybe not here in the US, but in other places,” Lyn Dutson, theater department program director, said.
Some of the major themes the play touches on are overcoming destiny and fate, and whether such a thing is even possible. The main character, King Basillo played by Thomas Murray, sends his son, played by Heath Cates, to grow up encaged in a cave because of a prophecy he feels is destined to manifest itself. He makes an effort to reincorporate his son back into the mainstream world after several years of inhumane treatment.
The play also addresses themes of leadership, and when those in charge cross lines of morality in their judgements.
