Dan White, coordinator of Mesa’s Day of Unity explained that the red silohuettes that could be seen in front of the Kirk Center Oct. 6 represented victims of domestic violence.

MCC held its first Day of Unity ceremony to promote awareness of domestic violence on Oct. 6.
Dan White, coordinator for Mesa’s Day of Unity, began the ceremony with the ringing of a bell.
“This bell shall be rang three times today. Once to mourn those who sadly lost their lives to domestic violence, twice to celebrate those who have escaped violent relationships and the third is to unite us as a community to let our voices be heard, let men know that domestic violence is not okay. This is not about anger; it’s about power and control,” said Dan White, coordinator for Mesa’s Day of Unity.
About one in four women is likely to be abused by some kind of significant other in her lifetime, according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence.
Purple ribbons were handed out as a reminder for Domestic Violence Awareness month, which is held in October.
