Smoking infractions rarely cited

MCC student Beth Trobaugh smokes a cigarette on campus.

Most college students don’t have $100 to spare, but that is what MCC students may be forced to pay if they refuse to comply with the campus smoking policy ordinance.
“Everyone walks around smoking on their way to class. Even I wasn’t always a smoker and I think that it’s just about being respectful of others,” said smoker Brandon Waite.
The Mesa City ordinance states, “When a smoker is discovered violating the policy (smoking outside of the designated smoking areas), it is recommended that you inform the smoker of the ordinance. If the smoker does not comply with the ordinance, you may choose to report the person to the police department where they will be cited with a fine and taken to court.”
Mesa law prohibits having a lit cigarette within 25 feet of a building.
The ashtrays are 12 feet away from the building at most locations.
Student Brandon Pierre was smoking less than 10 feet from the entrance to the Kirk Student Center.
Pierre said he was unaware of the policy when he was confronted about his distance from the building.
“I just sat here to smoke in the shade. I feel bad because I didn’t know, but now that I do, I won’t do it again. It’s disrespectful. Some people have asthma,” Pierre said.
Steve Corich, director of College Safety at MCC, said, “We haven’t run into too many problems thus far. When we have asked people to comply with the rules and put the cigarette out or go elsewhere, they do. We get positive results about 99 percent of the time.”
Unfortunately, many smoking students aren’t aware of the policy.
“College Safety should consider letting people know about it, and they should publicize it a little more,” Pierre said.
The rules of the ordinance and the locations of designated smoking areas are outlined in a yellow pamphlet available to students at the College Safety building or in the Kirk Student Center.
