MCC’s Thunderbirds beat Scottsdale Community College’s Fighting Artichokes 7-1 on Oct. 3. MCC’s soccer team was 9-2 at the time, while SCC’s record was 1-8.
From the start, MCC put on the pressure and never let up, applying a strong and steady offense that kept the ball close to the SCC goal for the majority of the game. MCC’s first goal was scored 10 minutes into the game, off a header by Scott Douglas.
The second goal was scored less then three minutes later.
Shortly after, SCC scored its first and only goal of the game. MCC goalie, Patrick Brown, prevented any further goals.
MCC scored two more points, displaying some excellent passing skills and working together to confound the Artichokes’ defense and score two more goals in the first half.
Late in the first half, an SCC player kicked MCC’s Ben Pullen and then held the ball behind his back, refusing to give it to the referee.
At halftime, MCC claimed the lead and they continued to own the second half of the game.
After the game, Parsons said, “I think the team is really hitting its peak. They’re playing better soccer now in the second part of the season, and really working as a team.”
Parsons acknowledged that the tempers of Artichokes players heated up towards the end of the first half, but expressed relief that none of his players were seriously injured in the events.
Parsons pointed out Scott Douglas as the game’s feature player, saying, “Scottie scored the first two goals, which started our momentum and helped carry us through the rest of the game.”
Douglas said, “I scored the first and third goal tonight, but we all worked as a team. I think we’re doing much better, and focusing on the end result.”
Scott Douglas expressed this enthusiasm in his parting comments: “We’re going to go all the way. Go T-birds!”
