The Thunderbird football team’s dominating performance over
the Phoenix Bears Oct. 18 kicked them right back into contention for
the conference lead.
The night started off very shaky for the Thunderbirds, Rodney Burnes
bobbled the kickoff return for Mesa and Phoenix recovered the fumble
at Mesa’s 15-yard line. The Bears took an early lead with a
1 yard run by quarterback Hunter Walden only two minutes and three
seconds into the first quarter.
Head basketball coach Alton Lister, is revved up and eager to
get the 2003-2004 season on its way. This is Lister’s fourth
year with the Thunderbirds, after playing in the NBA for 17 years,
and he has his sights set on the playoffs and even further.
The initial look at the team seems bleak. This year’s team
will take a very different shape than last year’s. Last
year’s two top scorers are no longer with the team, and
the sole returning player from last year’s roster is Andre
Bailey, who currently is playing football and will not join the
team until football season is over.
“Man I love the smell of mass competition in the morning,”
Pete Morrissy, of a competing school, said as he pulled himself
up from his calf stretch.
It was an early morning for the men and women of the MCC cross country
team as they sat underneath their MCC banner, planning their strategy
for the Canyon West Classic on Oct. 18 at Kiwanis Park.
Of the eight competing schools, coach Clyde Resendez stated, “New
Mexico Community College poses the greatest challenge, but we expect
to run a pretty good race.”
Nine
of MCC’s baseball players showcased their talent in front of
professional scouts and four-year universities at an ACCAC sophomore
all-star game played Oct. 11.
Homecoming royalty nominees
were anxious for campaigning and elections to commence.
“If I won, I’d be excited, that would be cool,”
one nominee said during the mandatory meeting for the nominees held
Oct. 18.
