Letter to the Editor
Keep fighting
The “Smokers Segregated” article makes a valid point of segregation between smokers and non-smokers. To tell the truth, as a fellow smoker, I’ve never given much thought to the segregation. It was my choice to start smoking, and continue smoking for that matter. However, the comparison to African-American and the “whites only” drinking fountains led the reader to believe you don’t have a choice of whether or not to smoke. It exaggerates a moment of irritation you might have experienced. I agree with your complaints and thank you for voicing your opinion. It was a very well-written article and I do look forward to reading more of them. In another defense, siding with your point of mid-century ignorance, keep fighting; because African-Americans, women and other challenged groups fought for their rights even when it seemed a hopeless cause. Who knows, maybe you could start the “civil smokers war.”
