were crowned king and queen at this years homecoming. |
This year’s Western homecoming theme led to a littering around
campus of haystacks and other western accents.
The festivities officially started on Oct. 29, building up to the big
day on Nov. 1. MCC celebrated the yearly Fall Bash and T-Bird Rally hosted
by ASMCC.
“Today is not only the start of Homecoming, but is a day clubs throughout
campus get to advertise and fund raise. It is also a day to vote for homecoming
queen and king,” said Kristen Weston, secretary for ASMCC.
Saturday events kicked off at 4:30 p.m. by the clock tower. The day started
with a free BBQ catered by El Paso and silent auction.
“I think this is going to be best Homecoming ever since I have been
here,” Elena Manuel, administrative secretary and sport who has
been on the homecoming committee for 10 years, said. “Our committee
was the biggest it’s been, allowing us to get a lot of awesome work
and preparation done. One of our best accomplishments was the barbeque.”
Tables were filled not only with food but with yearbooks and awards dated
all the way back to 1965. A country-western band played music during the
activities. The atmosphere was filled with happiness and laughter as the
many alumni reminisced and chatted about what they have been doing since
their last year at MCC.
The ceremony started with the MCC Spirit Squad showing off its talents
to get the crowd pumped. Following their performance, athletic director
Allen Benedict took the mic to welcome the 1973 undefeated football team.
Announcements were made to let students know what is underway for MCC.
“The alumni program plans to expand the number of alumni by including
transfer students who have earned at least 48 credit hours but not necessarily
graduated at MCC,” Marcy Snitzer, coordinator for the alumni and
communications, said. “By next fall, we hope to dedicate a Wall
of Fame recognizing our former student government leaders. This summer,
we received the news at the Kirk Student Center, the display space for
the plaques, will be renovated over the course of a year.”
President of ASMCC, Bonnie Capen informed the audience that the student
government has created the first official MCC flag.
Half time was the highlight of the festivities except, perhaps, for the
game. The moment many had been waiting for came to a sparkling beginning
when bright and colorful fireworks took to the sky and exploded over the
football field. The Spirit Squad took to the field and performed to a
country medley followed by some elaborate tumbling set to the song “Wild
Wild West” by Will Smith.
Chad Jewel and Jessica DeLattre were named Homecoming King and Queen of
2003.
