Lauren Revert (10) attempts to block a tip by Pima College as Moni Tautu (9) looks on. Volleyball finished the season 5-12.

MCC’s women’s volleyball team was a force to be reckoned with Oct. 31 as the lady Thunderbirds beat the Pima Aztecs three games to none in the season-ending volleyball game.
The home game not only marked the end of the 5-12 season, but for two returning sophomores Tammie Rovey, and Moni Tautu, it was a farewell performance. “This game belongs to Moni Tautu,” said an emotional coach Tricia Melfy. “She contributed 10 kills, 20 digs, and four blocks to help solidify our wins tonight and I could not be happier. As a team, I expected we were going to do well against Pima tonight. The girls went out there and dominated the floor like I knew they could. I’m looking forward to next season,” she added.
Although the girls finished with an unfortunate season record of only five wins and 12 losses, one would never guess by the way they came together for the night’s season closer.
The women not only defeated the Aztecs but swept them three games to none.
Melfy explained that the two major contributing factors, which led to the losing record, were youth and the relentless injuries. “We had nine freshmen, and only two returning sophomores this year,” said Melfy.
Megan Julander had a great performance. The freshman had six kills, made sweeping saves, and displayed her talent at the net with three blocks.“This is my first year playing for Mesa and it’s a lot of fun,” said Julander. “We all get along really well and we spend a lot of time together. I’m looking forward to playing next season,” she added.
Both teams were in high spirits. Balloons, flowers, and team photographs were given before the game started to the two departing MCC sophomores as a good luck send off.
The MCC women dominated the first match as they took an early 8-1 lead. The period ended with the birds on top 30-22..
The team showed no signs of slowing down in the second period. Conquering the floor once again and coming out on top with their second consecutive defeat, Mesa outscored Pima with an impressive 30-18 win.
MCC wrapped up the game with a victorious match. They finished the last period with another 30-18 win.
The volleyball team will be back next season, rested and ready to play for a better record.
