Food donations aid fire victims

“Devastating wildfires have ravaged hundreds of thousands of acres in San Diego County over the past few days. Lives have been lost. Homes have burned. Now it’s time to come together, and help those who are suffering the most,” declared flyers recently distributed across MCC.
The NAACP and the BSU collected items through Dec. 1 to help victims of the Southern California wildfires.
“We are doing our part in service to the community and a humanitarian effort to reach out and help people who are suffering from the national destruction,” said Karen Hardin, counselor at MCC and adviser to the on-campus branch of the NAACP. “With the holiday season arriving, it’s time to be joyous and peaceful, but for the victims in California, it’s a time to be sensitive and depressed. We want to let them know that we are here for them, to comfort them and to get them through this.”
The Multicultural and Counseling offices asked for canned goods and nonperishable items such as gently worn clothing and shoes.
Monetary donations are accepted through the American Red Cross’s Southern California Fire Disaster Relief Fund.
“Although I am an active supporter in the drive, it was Dan White’s idea,” Hardin stated.
White is an adjunct faculty member at MCC who recently helped organize MCC’s activities for Domestic Violence Awareness in October.
“We are going to be hand boxing and wrapping the donations, and delivering them to the American Red Cross,” White said.
“A real way to give thanks this holiday season is by helping others,” said Hardin.
