District offers student health insurance
Myte Alleyne
Contributing Writer
By law, a person who owns a car must own car insurance to protect
the car owner and other drivers as well. For those that have been in a
car accident, the importance of insurance is clear.
So, what about health insurance?
No law requires citizens to have health insurance, but anyone who has
ever faced a serious medical problem can explain the importance.
That is why Maricopa County Community Colleges offer health insurance
to all students at a competitive rate so that a student’s educational
plans do not become derailed due to a health problem or the medical bills
that follow.
Students can also insure their eligible dependents, their spouse, and
children up to age 19. The spouse must live with the insured student and
the children cannot be self-supporting.
The Student and Sickness Insurance Plan has incorporated into its coverage
access to a community of doctors, also known as a PPO. The medical network
includes doctors from across the city, state and nation.
If a students with this coverage seeks medical attention from a health
professional within the network, the plan will cover 100 percent of the
cost. If this same patient is treated by a doctor outside of the network,
the plan covers 80 percent of the cost.
The plan also covers pregnancy and long-term or persistent medical issues
such as diabetes for as long as the student is enrolled at a Maricopa
County Community College.
The coverage for pregnancy also applies to the birth of any child legally
adopted by the insured student
There are two insurance plans for students. The first plan will cover
up to $10,000 with a yearly cumulative deductible of $250, and has a considerably
less monthly financial investment. The other plan will cover up to $50,000
in medical expenses, and has a yearly cumulative deductible of $350.
The benefits will cover daily room and board at a medical facility, surgical
options, anesthesia, doctor’s visits, emergency care doctors, mental
or nervous disorders, physiotherapy, diagnostic imaging and lab procedures,
outpatient prescription drugs, hospital outpatient care, crutches, wheelchairs,
braces and appliances, dental treatment and much more.
To obtain a brochure for more information about insurance available students
can visit Student Services in the Kirk Student Center.
The MCC campus does not have a representative to answer questions, but
a phone number is listed in the brochure for more detailed information.
For questions regarding eligibility or enrollment, students can call 1
(800) 537-1777.
