Tourney loss not reflection of season

The NJCAA Division 1 national championship tournament played Nov. 21 was a hard loss for MCC’s women’s soccer team.
Mesa came into the game after a loss to Rhode Island Community College.
The second round of the tournament against Lewis and Clark Community College would bring them closer to fifth place, the highest they could place in the tournament after their first loss.
After a scoreless first half, head coach Ken Parsons demanded more precision and effort from his lady T-birds. They responded with a dominating second half that opened a stretch of sure scoring opportunities.
Mesa fought to dominate the second half with relentless speed, strength and ball control. Clear shot opportunities were obtained by MCC, but no points were put on the board.
MCC’s sure-footed Kristina Burris missed two one-on-one scoring opportunities within six yards of Trailblazers’ goalie Danielle Troha. With 10 minutes remaining in regulation, Alli Landon shot a penalty kick and missed.
Lewis and Clark Community College had a scoring opportunity with 7:44 left in the game. Cole’s attempt was denied by the Thunderbirds’ Bridget Barrasso.
With just over five minutes to play, Burris missed another one-on-one opportunity.
In overtime, the Trailblazers claimed a score and the game.
The loss was a crushing blow to the team.
“Unfortunately a great season will be judged by the outcome here, and that is hard to swallow,” said Parsons. “The girls played well; the score could have easily been 6-0 in regulation. Sometimes that’s the way it goes, and that’s the way it went for us today. It’s a tough loss.”
