Associate degree provides a leg-up

“It was something that you can put on a resume that will put you one step ahead of anyone with
only a high school
diploma.”

Sarah Galetti
former MCC student

When the word “graduation” comes to mind, most people think of accomplishments such as a high school diploma, a bachelor’s degree from a university, or even a master’s degree or doctorate, but many students think of community college as a stepping stone to get to a four-year university even though many others are graduating from MCC every semester with an associate’s degree.

What does an associate’s degree do for a student’s future? Bob Vogt, head of advisement at MCC, said they can be especially helpful for those not planning to attend a four-year university.

“(An associate’s degree) separates individuals from high school students, and demonstrates a desire to learn and complete a task,” Vogt said.
Many times, students complete the requirements for an associate’s degree without even knowing it. While many students are trying to get their general studies out of the way before transferring, they end up completing their associate’s degree.

Former MCC student Sarah Galetti graduated from MCC with her associate’s degree and said that it helped her get better paying jobs while she was completing her teaching degree at ASU.

“It was something that you can put on a resume that will put you one step ahead of anyone with only a high school diploma,” she said.
Students wondering if they have met the requirements for graduation should first speak with an adviser.

Generally, between 60 and 64 credits with a grade point average of 2.0 or better is needed to graduate from MCC.

Next, students must fill out an application for graduation, and then fill out an exit survey in the advisement office.

A $5 application fee must be paid in the cashiers’ office for processing and students can then decide if they would like to take part in the annual spring ceremony for graduation.

The ceremony costs $25 and includes the cap and gown. The event is held outside the library and generally boasts attendance of about 200 people.

The deadline for spring graduation is March 1.
