T-Birds’ Briefs

Men’s Basketball

Dec. 3 vs. South Mountain Community College
MCC 82, SMCC 78
The Thunderbirds came back after being down by five at halftime to clench the victory. MCC’s Fred Marshall led the game with 21 points. Micky Burnyk scored 20 points for Mesa. Mychal Hodgson led SMCC with 20 points and 11 rebounds.
Marshall grabbed eight rebounds.

Dec. 6 at Yavapai Community College
YCC 105, MCC 95
Mesa’s Fred Marshall lead the game with 29 points. Yavapai’s Akeem Price finished with 24 points and 13 rebounds. Micky Burtnyk scored 12.

Dec. 10 vs. Cochise Community College
MCC 104, CCC 77
Micky Burtnyk scored 24 points along with five rebounds, three assists and five steals. Fred Marshall had 22 points. Cochise CC was led by Todd Bostic with 16 points.

Dec. 13 at Arizona Western Community College
AWCC 82, MCC 70
Fred Marshall scored 20 points and Ryan Rourke pitched in with 16. AWCC’s Robert Hines scored 14.

Jan. 10 vs. Pima Community College
MCC 99, PCC 91
Ryan Rourke led the Thunderbirds with 33 points and 11 rebounds. Micky Burtnyk followed with 26 points and six rebounds.
PCC’s Abel Solomon had 24 points and eight rebounds.

Women’s Basketball

Dec. 3 vs. South Mountain Community College
MCC 103, SMCC 64
The top three scorers for Mesa were Brandi Steinke with 26, Allie Gard with 20, and Melissa Murray with 19. Takesha Colter scored 17 points for SMCC.

Dec. 6 at Yavapai Community College
YCC 81, MCC 57

Dec. 10 vs. Cochise Community College
CCC 69, MCC 60
MCC fell short despite a hard-fought effort by Mesa. Allie Gard had 17 points.

Dec. 13 at Arizona Western Community College
AWCC 82, MCC 55

Dec. 15 vs. John A. Logan
Logan 70, MCC 63
Melissa Murray scored 19 points and Allie Gard scored 18. Brandi Steinke had 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Dec. 27 vs. NW Powell
NWP 71, MCC 61
Allie Gard and Brandi Steinke each pitched in 18 points. Steinke also had 12 rebounds.

Dec. 30 vs. Chandler-Gilbert Community College
MCC 59, CGCC 40
Allie Gard led with 16 points, followed by Melissa Murray with 13. Holly Wride grabbed 12 rebounds in the first win for the Thunderbirds in the last four games.

Jan. 7 vs. Glendale Community College
MCC 64, GCC 62
The Thunderbirds pulled in a victory with Allie Gard’s 20 points and Brandi Steinke’s 17.

Jan. 10 vs. Pima Community College
MCC 58, PCC 52
Brandi Steinke led the T-birds with 16 points, 11 rebounds and five steals. Krisheena Tsingine had 13 points, 12 rebounds and five steals.

Dennis Mikulich Mesa Legend
Ryan Rourke shoots a jumper in the MCC home game against Glendale Community College. The Thunderbirds fell 96-82 to the Gauchos. GCC was ahead by six points at halftime and maintained the lead for the win. Rourke led Mesa with 20 points, four rebounds and nine assists. Fred Marshall chipped in with 18 points. Eric Bloom led Glendale with 24 points and seven rebounds. This loss brought MCC’s conference record to 4-3 and overall to 7-7. Glendale is ranked seventh in the nation and third in conference with a 6-2 conference record and a 12-4 overall record. Mesa stands fourth in the conference.
