Season off with a strong start

Mike Helm
Contributing Writer

The Thunderbird baseball team is 7-0 as conference games approaches.
Now is the time to “get your pitchers out there, get some guys out, run our bunt plays and get any kinks out,” according to Head Coach Tony Cirelli.
One aspect of the team that Cirelli noted needing work is the pitching. With three incoming freshman and a handful of pitchers from last year with limited time on the mound, Cirelli believes they must work on mixing up pitches.
“ When we start playing the better teams you can’t just throw fastball, fastball and fastball. You’re going to have to change speeds. Throw in some changeups and curveballs for strikes,” according to the coach.
The leading hitters so far for the Thunderbirds are sophomore John McCarthy at .476 with a home run and four stolen bases, freshman Nate Wells batting .411 with seven runs batted in, freshman Bob McMurray batting .400 with two home runs and thirteen runs batted in, sophomore Matt Lambeth also batting .400, and sophomore Brandon Christenson batting .380 with five runs batted in.
The Thunderbirds have so far defeated Northlake Texas 8-2, Northwest Colorado 12-2, Eastern Utah 6-4 and swept Weber State in four games 1-0, 16-2, 8-2 and 12-2.
Sophomore pitcher Sean Gallian is 2-0 and freshman Kyler Newby and Tom Johnson also stand at 2-0.
“ We have kids who are right there. Someone’s gonna’ step up. You just don’t know who it’s gonna be,” he explained.
